Saturday, Jan. 1 recap

Marshall: 72-55 win over Southern Miss. Guard Savannah Wheeler scored 30 points, despite getting shut out in the first quarter. This was the third time Wheeler scored at least 30 points in a game. She also added nine rebounds and five assists. The Herd held Southern Miss to just 32.8% from the floor and 20% from behind the arc. 

Central Michigan: 72-68 win over NIU. Central Michigan forward Jahari Smith led all players with a career-high 21 rebounds, good for the most by a MAC player this season and fifth-most in program history. She also added 11 points, one assist, two steals and five blocks. Her teammate guard Molly Davis had 32 points, five rebounds, 10 assists and one block. NIU forward A’jah Davis led her team with 23 points and 17 rebounds. Davis shot 10-19 from the field but just 3-8 from the free-throw line. 

Longwood: 83-78 win over Presbyterian. Presbyterian forward Jade Compton recorded a game-high 32 points and 15 rebounds while going 10-21 from the floor. As a team, the Blue Hose shot 40.7% from the floor, but just 62.9% from the free-throw line, while the Lancers shot 43.1% from the floor and 71.4% from the line. There were 63 total attempted free throws in the game. 

Toledo: 64-58 win over Akron. Forward Jordyn Dawson scored more than half of the Zips’ points, recording 30 points, nine rebounds, one assist and six steals. Despite shooting 43.5% from behind the arc Akron was outshot on the floor 41.3% to 32.8% by Toledo. The Rockets were led by center Hannah Noveroske who had 19 points, nine rebounds, one steal and one block. 

Idaho State: 67-57 win over Montana State. Guard Estefania Ors led the Bengals with 33 points while also adding six rebounds, three assists and one steal. Ors went 12-18 from the floor and made seven threes. In addition to her success in this single game, Ors is also the fourth leading scorer in the program and 22 points away from having sole position of third place. 

Richmond: 82-76 win over Duquesne. Guard Kate Klimkiewicz led the Spiders with 20 points and also added six rebounds and three assists. The three-point shooting was dominant by both teams with the Dukes shooting 8-12 from behind the arc and the Spiders making 9 of their 20 three-point attempts. The Dukes scored 43 bench points, more than half of their total. Guard Amanda Kalin led Duquesne with 18 points in her first game of the season.
