“I’ve learned that this is a team that is really hungry. It’s a core roster that’s really hungry. But they knew coming into this offseason, they needed to make some changes. They were playing a little bit old style basketball with Bill Laimbeer as their coach. They had two real bigs, which makes sense for his style of who he was as a player. But they needed to become a new different team, a team that’s more like today’s NBA and WNBA more three point shooting more spacing the floor.”
Matthew speaks on Becky Hammon and how she feels about coaching in the WNBA:
“I even asked her today after their preseason game against Minnesota what was coaching, like? And she said the one difference was you guys do your national anthem at different times; I almost missed coming out on the floor to start the game.
So, it’s going to take some time for her. But, she said, just getting in that rhythm. Getting the players on the floor was big for them today. But just for her to get into that rhythm of being a coach, calling timeouts and having officials was really good. And I think, maybe the first five or six games, it’ll still be kind of new for her.”
