Reactions to women’s college basketball from someone whose internet has been out for a few weeks

Catching up on two weeks of very hectic college basketball news and updates

Fifteen days ago, I discovered that my hotspot had a monthly data limit, after which my internet speed would drop to effectively useless. (You can actually see this exact moment right about here.)

I was settling into a new apartment at the time and relying on a hotspot over the course of trying to convince Verizon that my building had three stories, not two, in order to prove the existence of my unit to a customer service representative.

Howard Megdal, founder and editor of The Next and The IX, released his latest book on May 7, 2024. This deeply reported story follows four connected generations of women’s basketball pioneers, from Elvera “Peps” Neuman to Cheryl Reeve and from Lindsay Whalen to Sylvia Fowles and Paige Bueckers.

Anyway, my hotspot has hit a new month, and Verizon will install internet in my apartment next week. As a result, I am able to spend my free time doing Basketball Stuff again for the first time since I started moving. Here’s how the past 24 hours have gone for me:

“Why is NC State a No. 2 seed?”

The Pack lost to LSU and Cal; their best wins are Duke and TCU. Eh?

“Is any team in the Big 12 actually good?”

Oklahoma State lost to BYU. Kansas State got crushed by Oklahoma State. TCU lost to K-State. Oklahoma State got embarrassed by West Virginia, who lost to Baylor, who lost to TCU.

JuJu Watkins did WHAT this week?!”

The answer is 38 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and eight blocks against the clear No. 1 team in the country. This prompted a discussion among our scouting crew over our current comps Watkins’ range of WNBA career outcomes. At this point, the median outcome is in the range of Maya Moore, and the 90th percentile outcome is LeBron James, with no existing comparison for Watkins that fits both her talent and positional archetypes.

Mikayla Blakes scored how many points in a game?”

Oh, it was 53 points on 24 shots against Florida; that makes as much sense as such a bonkers line possibly could.

Georgia Amoore scored how many points in a game?”

Oh, it was 43 points against Oklahoma; that makes a little sense.

“Stanford is way worse than I had thought.”

As in, more-than-doubled-up-by-Notre Dame, worst-loss-in-42 years bad.

Olivia Miles and Hannah Hidalgo are still hitting almost five combined 3s per game!”

For reference, this makes Miles a 70 FV and Hidalgo an 80 FV, although Hunter might disagree.

“Why is Sedona Prince still allowed to play college basketball?”

Prince was recently involved in an incident in which both she and an ex-girlfriend called the police. This incident was at Prince’s home and resulted in physical injuries to both, according to the Washington Post report.

This is part of a pattern of allegations of abuse dating back to 2019, the first time Prince was accused of sexual assault. Another accusation came in 2022. Multiple ex-partners have been vocal with accusations of severe intimate partner abuse over that same timeframe.

No charges have been reported related to these allegations. The Washington Post has also reported that according to police reports and an ex-girlfriend, multiple women who have made allegations have been asked by Prince to sign nondisclosure agreements.

None of the three schools she has attended have had her miss any time to conduct an investigation into allegations at the time.
