Locked On Women’s Basketball: Providence head coach Erin Batth
By The Next
Batth enters her second season as Friars head coach
For Providence College and head coach Erin Batth, Year 1 of the Batth era was a chance to serve notice that the Friars are emerging ahead of schedule. It was also a long-overdue opportunity for Batth to finally put her stamp on a program after working everywhere — from Wes Moore’s NC State to WNBA front offices. On Thursday’s episode of Locked On Women’s Basketball, Batth joins host Howard Megdal to discuss her time at Providence, the competition in the BIG EAST conference and so much more. Enjoy this wide-ranging discussion.

In Batth’s first season in Providence, the team exceeded expectations with a 13-21 record, boasting a top 100 defense and a 15% midrange shot rate. On the podcast, Batth emphasizes the importance of defense, communication and player development, particularly for senior forward Olivia Olsen, who led the team last season in offensive rebounds and block percentage.
“I really want to see [Olivia] score more in transition. We’re trying to push the ball anyway, and so I’ve been telling her — give me a strike, which means run, run, run. … I really want to get her on the go, I do. I would like to stretch out her midrange game. … I think she could really capitalize off of making those midrange shots. I’d like to see her do that. We’ve been working on that, and then rebounding. I want her to take over the world — get an economy size bottle of Windex and clean the boards, baby. I want her to get all the rebounds she can get and more. I think that’s a really big deal,” Batth told Howard.
Later, Howard and Coach Batth discuss upcoming games against tough opponents like Columbia and Boston College, scheduled to test the team’s readiness for the BIG EAST and postseason play.
