The Minnesota Lynx star provides Mila updates, talks Lynx and WNBA Marketing
Host Howard Megdal is back for another episode of Locked on Women’s Basketball. In this episode, he catches up with Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier, who is redefining what a WNBA offseason can look like. She joins host Howard Megdal to discuss life with her eight-month-old, Mila, what work she’s putting in on the basketball court, while divulging her recruiting techniques in this massive WNBA free agency period for the Minnesota Lynx. The discussion about her alma mater, UConn, is also a must-listen for the context of their success and how she views this tumultuous season.

Napheesa Collier spoke about her decision to forego overseas play and stay home:
“I think it’s a really personal decision for everyone. For me, I really, really value being around my family. So even if I didn’t have Mila, which is a huge reason why I’ve stayed now, I love being with my family, especially around the holidays, I’ve always been really close with them. And I do like that targeted, like being able to work on something. I like that a lot. That’s worked for me in the past.
But I mean, there are drawbacks as well, because there’s nothing like being in a game situation to help you grow your game. So I’m not getting that. So I have always for three on three, but you know, it’s not the same as being on a team. So you know, there are benefits and drawbacks, for me, the good definitely outweighed the bad with being here. So, like I said, I think it’s a personal decision for everyone. And this is what’s worked well for me.”

Napheesa Collier also reflected on the first week of WNBA Free Agency and how it compares to the NBA’s off-season:
“It’s really fun, I have to say I am happy that I am safe under contract with the Minnesota Lynx. It’s, it’s almost like a drama, you know, you never know what’s going to come out from day to day, like who’s been traded, where for what people throw up picks, it’s just really, really exciting. It feels like something new comes out every day with you know, the stuff with Dearica (Hamby) now.
It’s just like something is happening every day and free agency. So it’s really interesting to see. And I think we’re gonna see a lot of big moves this year, we’ve already seen, you know, JJ (Jonquel Jones) to New York, who thought that was gonna happen at the end of last season, and I didn’t, I didn’t hear any stirrings of that. So I think you’re gonna see a lot more, we hope to stir the pot, we hope to be in the news for good things coming soon. And it’s gonna be really exciting to see where everyone ends up by the time the season starts.”
