Em begins the podcast by highlighting how this season’s free agency cycle is coming at a time when several franchises are facing major decisions about their futures.
“The biggest thing is just that there are some teams that are at pretty major inflection points — either trying to build off of last year or trying to make a hard pivot when we’ve seen players unexpectedly leave or maybe breakout or regress in ways that weren’t expected. So take the Washington Mystics, for example. Elena Delle Donne … indicated that she would be leaving in free agency. This has resulted in what’s going to be the second sign-and-trade of her career. But that means the Mystics right now are at a position where they have to do sort of a hard pivot and figure out what direction do they want to go in for next year.”
Natalie and Em later go on to discuss how the league’s upcoming Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiations in 2025 could impact the length of player contracts, free agency moves to date and Em’s hottest predictions. Don’t miss this episode.
