Before joining the Aces, Ellis has served as an assistant coach with various USA Basketball men’s teams over the span of eight years. From 2018-20 he also served as head coach of the G League Stockton Kings and was the assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns during the 2017-2018 season. He was also one of four D-League coaches involved in the 2017 NBA Draft Combine, and from 2016-2017, he was the head coach for the NBA G League Northern Arizona Suns. From 2012-2016, the Dallas native had assistant coaching stints with various teams: The Bakersfield Jam, Grand Rapids Drive, Reno Bighorns and Tulsa 66ers.
“The [Aces] organization’s success is a testament to the culture that Nikki, Becky, the entire staff, and players have built,” said Ellis. “Their commitment to excellence and championship-level standards in everything they do is truly inspiring. I’m grateful for the opportunity and I can’t wait to serve and add value to the entire organization.”
Prior to becoming a coach, Ellis played four seasons at NAIA Southern Nazarene University, where he became the fourth all-time scorer in program history with 1,822 points. While playing in school, he also ranked second all-time in 3-pointers made with a total of 248 in 129 games.
In 2001, he was drafted in the inaugural year of the NBA D-League by the Huntsville Flight. Ellis played one year in the D-League before playing 10 years overseas in Germany, Italy, Spain and Turkey.
